Custom knee brace

Knee conditions we treat

The knee is one of the most complex and heavily used joints in the human body. It comprises three bony compartments, four major ligaments, two menisci, and the patella — all working together to allow flexion, extension, and some rotation of the leg. This complexity makes the knee especially vulnerable to injury and degenerative disease.

At Marchildon, our orthotists bring deep expertise in assessing and orthotically treating knee pathologies. We treat a wide range of conditions including osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis), anterior and posterior cruciate ligament injuries, patellofemoral syndrome, meniscal injuries, lateral ligament sprains, post-traumatic instability, and post-surgical recovery.

Custom or prefabricated: how to choose

The choice between a custom and a prefabricated brace depends on several clinical factors your orthotist will evaluate during the consultation. Prefabricated braces offer a fast, effective solution for many mild to moderate conditions. They come in different sizes and can be adjusted to improve comfort and effectiveness.

Custom braces are recommended for more complex conditions, atypical morphologies, or when very precise biomechanical control is required. They are built from a cast of your knee and leg, guaranteeing a perfect fit and optimal therapeutic effectiveness.

Our assessment process

Assessment for a knee brace at Marchildon is a rigorous clinical workflow. Your orthotist begins with a detailed physical examination of the knee, including ligament stability tests, range-of-motion evaluation, and identification of painful areas. They then analyze your gait to understand how your knee functions during walking.

Based on this information — combined with your medical diagnosis and treatment goals — the orthotist determines the most appropriate type of brace. Precise measurements are then taken to guarantee an optimal fit, whether the brace is prefabricated or custom.

Our orthotists are members of the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ) and the Association des Orthésistes-Prothésistes du Québec (AOPQ).

Frequently asked questions about knee braces

What's the difference between a custom and a prefabricated knee brace?

A prefabricated knee brace comes in standard sizes and can be adjusted to a degree. A custom brace is built from the exact measurements of your knee and leg. The choice depends on your condition, the severity of your symptoms, and your activities. Your orthotist will recommend the best option after the assessment.

Do I need a prescription for a knee brace?

A medical prescription is required. You can still consult our orthotists for a preliminary assessment without a prescription.

How long does the analysis for a knee brace take?

A complete analysis lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. It includes an analysis of the knee condition and your gait, precise measurements, and a discussion of your treatment goals. If a prefabricated brace is recommended, on prescription, it can often be fitted and delivered the same day.

Can I do sports with a knee brace?

Yes — many knee braces are designed specifically for sports. Functional braces for cruciate ligaments, for example, let you return to sport safely. Your orthotist will recommend a model suited to your sport and condition.

Are knee braces reimbursed?

Yes — prescribed knee braces are generally covered by RAMQ, CNESST, SAAQ, and most private insurance plans. The reimbursement amount varies by brace type and coverage program. Our administrative team will guide you through all the procedures.

How long does it take to get used to a knee brace?

The adaptation period varies by brace type and condition. Light braces can be comfortable from day one, while rigid custom braces may need 1 to 2 weeks of gradual adaptation. Your orthotist will give you a graduated wearing protocol.
