Knee brace for arthritis

Unloading braces designed to relieve arthritic knee pain by redistributing mechanical forces and protecting the remaining cartilage.

Understanding knee arthritis

Knee osteoarthritis, also called gonarthrosis, is a degenerative disease characterized by the progressive wear of joint cartilage. The cartilage, which normally acts as a cushion between the bones, thins over time, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. This condition affects millions of people in Canada and is one of the most common reasons for orthopedic consultations.

Knee osteoarthritis most often affects a single compartment of the joint — either the inner (medial) or outer (lateral) compartment. This particularity makes treatment with an unloading brace possible, as it aims to transfer the mechanical load from the affected compartment to the healthy one.

The principle behind the unloading brace

The unloading brace (also called an unloader brace or valgus/varus brace) is a mechanical device that modifies knee alignment to reduce pressure on the arthritic compartment. By applying a lateral corrective force, the brace slightly opens the joint space on the affected side, reducing bone-on-bone contact and easing pain.

This type of brace is particularly effective for mild to moderate unicompartmental osteoarthritis. Clinical studies have shown that unloading braces significantly reduce pain, improve function, and often delay or avoid the need for knee replacement surgery.

Our approach to arthritis

At Marchildon, the assessment for a knee arthritis brace includes a detailed physical examination, an analysis of your gait, and a review of your X-rays. Your orthotist determines the affected compartment, the degree of correction needed, and the most suitable type of brace.

Regular follow-up is essential to adjust the correction and ensure the brace continues to work optimally as your condition evolves.

Our orthotists are members of the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ) and the Association des Orthésistes-Prothésistes du Québec (AOPQ).

Frequently asked questions about braces for arthritis

How does an unloading brace relieve knee arthritis?

The unloading brace applies a lateral force that modifies the mechanical axis of the knee, transferring the load from the compartment affected by arthritis to the healthy compartment. This reduces pressure on the damaged cartilage, easing pain and improving mobility.

Can a brace replace surgery for knee arthritis?

In many cases, an unloading brace can significantly delay the need for surgery, or even avoid it altogether. It is particularly effective for mild to moderate unicompartmental osteoarthritis. Your physician and your orthotist will determine whether this option is appropriate for your stage of arthritis.

How long should I wear the brace each day?

The recommended wearing time varies according to the severity of your arthritis and your activities. In general, the brace is worn during activities that put stress on the knee: walking, prolonged standing, stairs, and physical activities. Your orthotist will establish a personalized wearing plan.

What is the lifespan of an arthritis brace?

A quality knee brace generally lasts 3 to 5 years with proper care. Wear depends on the intensity of use. Regular adjustments by your orthotist are recommended to maintain therapeutic effectiveness.

Is the arthritis brace covered by RAMQ?

Yes, physician-prescribed knee braces for arthritis are generally covered by RAMQ, CNESST, SAAQ, and private insurance. The coverage amount depends on your program. Our team helps you with the reimbursement process.
