Custom Orthotics in Montreal
For over 60 years, Marchildon has been designing and manufacturing custom foot orthotics that relieve pain, correct posture, and improve your quality of life.

What is a custom foot orthotic?
A custom foot orthotic is a medical device designed specifically to fit the unique shape of your foot. Unlike prefabricated insoles sold in pharmacies or stores, a custom orthotic is manufactured from precise impressions of your feet, taken during a comprehensive biomechanical analysis by a orthotist. This personalized approach targets exactly the areas requiring support, correction or cushioning.
The materials used in manufacturing a foot orthotic vary according to the patient's needs. These include rigid polypropylene shells for biomechanical correction, semi-rigid materials such as thermoformed polymers for a balance between support and comfort, as well as memory foam and genuine leather or technical material coverings for shock absorption and daily comfort. The choice of materials is determined by the orthotist based on the condition being treated, the patient's weight, activity level and type of footwear worn.
Prefabricated insoles offer generic support that does not account for the patient's individual biomechanics. They may provide some temporary comfort, but they do not correct the structural imbalances responsible for pain. A custom foot orthotic, on the other hand, directly affects the alignment of the foot, ankle and knee, treating the cause of pain rather than just the symptom. This is why healthcare professionals consistently recommend custom orthotics for treating foot conditions.
Benefits of custom foot orthotics
Corrected Posture
Better foot alignment influences the entire postural chain, from ankles to back, reducing muscular compensations.
Pain Relief
Significant reduction in foot, knee, and lower back pain through optimal pressure redistribution.
Optimal Alignment
Correction of biomechanical imbalances like excessive pronation or supination for stable, natural support.
Improved Performance
A stable, well-aligned base optimizes propulsion and reduces fatigue for both sports and daily life.

How much does a custom foot orthotic cost?
The price of a pair of custom foot orthotics generally ranges from $450 to $650, depending on the complexity of the condition and materials used. This amount includes the complete biomechanical analysis, manufacturing and necessary adjustments. Most of our patients receive partial or full reimbursement through their private insurance, CNESST or SAAQ.
Are foot orthotics covered by RAMQ?
No. RAMQ does not cover custom foot orthotics. However, many private insurance plans, as well as CNESST and SAAQ, may cover them in full or in part depending on your situation. Our team assists you with all administrative procedures.
How long does it take to manufacture orthotics?
Manufacturing your custom foot orthotics generally takes 2 to 3 weeks after the initial biomechanical analysis. Our orthotics are entirely manufactured in our Quebec workshop, allowing us to control every production step and ensure consistent quality.
What is the lifespan of a foot orthotic?
A quality custom foot orthotic has an average lifespan of 2 to 5 years, depending on use and type of activities. We recommend an annual reassessment to check the condition of orthotics and adjust as needed. Coverings can be replaced without remaking the entire orthotic.
Is there an adjustment period?
Yes, an adjustment period of 1 to 2 weeks is normal when wearing new foot orthotics. We recommend starting by wearing your orthotics a few hours per day, then gradually increasing the duration. If discomfort persists after 2 weeks, a free adjustment is performed at the clinic.
Do I need a medical prescription?
A medical prescription is not mandatory to obtain custom foot orthotics at Marchildon. However, it may be required by certain private insurance plans. We recommend checking with your insurer before your first visit.
What happens during a biomechanical analysis?
The biomechanical analysis lasts approximately 45 minutes and includes a complete examination of your posture, gait and foot mechanics. Your orthotist analyzes pressure points using digital technologies and takes precise impressions of your feet. This analysis allows designing an orthotic perfectly adapted to your anatomy.
What materials are used for orthotics?
We use a variety of medical-grade materials, including thermoformed polymers, memory foam and coverings in leather or technical materials. The choice of materials is determined by your orthotist based on your condition, activity level and type of footwear you wear.
Can my child wear foot orthotics?
Absolutely. Pediatric foot orthotics are common and often recommended from age 3 to correct gait disorders or flat feet. In children, orthotics play an important preventive role since the foot is still developing.
Can I use my orthotics for sports?
Yes, we manufacture orthotics specifically designed for sports practice, whether running, hockey, soccer or other activities. Sports orthotics are thinner and made with materials that absorb shock while providing dynamic support. Some patients choose to have a dedicated pair for sports.
Can orthotics be transferred between different shoes?
Yes, in most cases, your foot orthotics can be transferred from one pair of shoes to another, provided the shoes offer sufficient interior volume. During your assessment, your orthotist will advise you on the types of shoes most compatible with your orthotics.
How do I care for my foot orthotics?
To extend the lifespan of your orthotics, we recommend removing them from your shoes each evening to air dry. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap is sufficient. Avoid direct exposure to heat, such as a radiator or hair dryer, which could deform the materials.
