Compression garments and stockings

Conditions treated with compression

Compression therapy is a recognized, effective medical treatment for many vascular and lymphatic conditions. At Marchildon, our orthotists are specifically trained to assess your needs and recommend the compression type best suited to your condition.

Chronic venous insufficiency

Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves inside the leg veins fail, preventing blood from returning efficiently to the heart. Compression stockings apply graduated pressure that helps blood move upward, reducing swelling, heaviness, and pain.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a build-up of lymphatic fluid causing chronic swelling, often in the arms or legs. Compression garments help reduce and control swelling by encouraging lymphatic drainage. Custom solutions are often required for optimal treatment.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are dilated, twisted veins — usually in the legs — that cause pain, heaviness, and cosmetic discomfort. Compression helps relieve symptoms and prevent the progression of venous disease.

Heavy, tired legs

The feeling of heavy legs — especially at the end of the day or after long periods of standing — can be significantly relieved by light-class compression stockings. This is also recommended for prevention in at-risk individuals.

Compression classes

Compression stockings and garments are classified by the amount of pressure they apply, measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). Your physician selects the class based on the severity of your condition:

  • Class 1 (15-20 mmHg) : Light compression for tired legs, prevention during pregnancy, and long-haul travel.
  • Class 2 (20-30 mmHg) : Moderate compression for symptomatic varicose veins, mild to moderate venous insufficiency, and prevention of venous thrombosis.
  • Class 3 (30-40 mmHg) : Strong compression for severe venous insufficiency, moderate to severe lymphedema, and venous ulcers.
  • Class 4 (40+ mmHg) : Very strong compression for severe lymphedema and advanced vascular conditions. Always by medical prescription.

Custom or ready-to-wear?

Ready-to-wear compression stockings suit most patients and come in several sizes, lengths, and styles. They are typically more affordable and quickly available. Custom stockings are recommended when standard sizes don't fit your morphology, in cases of significant lymphedema, or when specific corrections are needed.

Our fitting process

Professional fitting is essential to guarantee effective compression. Our orthotists take precise measurements at multiple points along your limb — ideally in the morning when swelling is minimal. They also teach you the correct donning technique, which is essential for comfort and treatment effectiveness.

Regular follow-up is recommended to verify the compression remains adequate and that your stockings are in good condition. Our orthotists can reassess your needs as your condition evolves.

Our orthotists are members of the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ) and the Association des Orthésistes-Prothésistes du Québec (AOPQ).

Frequently asked questions about compression garments

What is the difference between ready-to-wear and custom compression stockings?

Ready-to-wear stockings come in standard sizes and suit the majority of patients. Custom stockings are built from the exact measurements of your leg and are recommended when standard sizes don't fit, in cases of significant lymphedema, or for atypical morphologies. Your orthotist will determine the best option during the assessment.

How do I choose the right compression class?

Compression class is determined by your physician based on your condition. Class 1 (15-20 mmHg) suits heavy legs and prevention. Class 2 (20-30 mmHg) is prescribed for moderate varicose veins and venous insufficiency. Classes 3 and 4 (30-40+ mmHg) are reserved for more severe cases such as advanced lymphedema.

How many hours a day should I wear my compression stockings?

Daily wearing time depends on your condition and your physician's recommendations. Your orthotist will give you precise instructions tailored to your situation.

Are compression stockings covered by RAMQ?

RAMQ covers compression garments only for cases of lymphedema, on medical prescription. The annual coverage includes: 3 day garments, 1 night garment, 1 non-elastic garment or bandage, and 1 accessory. Our orthotists will guide you through the procedure.

How do I care for my compression stockings?

Compression stockings should be washed daily by hand or on a delicate cycle in warm water with a mild soap. Avoid bleach and the dryer. Dry flat or hang in the shade. Owning at least two pairs is recommended so you can rotate them during washing.

When should I replace my compression stockings?

Compression stockings lose their elasticity and effectiveness after about 6 months of daily use. Regular replacement is recommended to maintain adequate therapeutic compression. For lymphedema, RAMQ annual coverage includes 3 day garments, 1 night garment, 1 non-elastic garment or bandage, and 1 accessory.

Do you offer compression garments for other parts of the body?

Yes — in addition to leg stockings, we offer compression sleeves for the arms (notably after breast-cancer treatment), compression gloves, torso compression garments, and compression bandages. Each product is fitted to your measurements and prescription.

Is the measurement-taking included in the service?

Yes, professional measurement is an integral part of our service. Your orthotist takes precise measurements at multiple points along your limb to guarantee an optimal fit and uniform compression. This is included in the price of the compression stocking.
